See three examples of how retailers used mobile messaging to reach shoppers during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2018.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are always two of the busiest shopping days of the year. This year stood out with record-breaking sales: Black Friday 2018 was the first in US history to see more than $2 billion in sales coming from smartphones. Meanwhile, Cyber Monday was the largest online shopping day in US history: online sales reached $7.9 billion, with $2.2 billion coming from smartphones (a 55.6% year-over-year increase in mobile shopping compared to Cyber Monday 2017).

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals might have come to an end, that doesn’t mean holiday shopping is complete. Even after record-breaking numbers, nearly 60% of US adults have made half or less of their holiday purchases—and that includes the 22% who have not even started shopping yet.

Here are three of our favorite examples of text messages sent by retailers during the holiday shopping weekend:

What they did

BarkShop—an online retailer for dog toys, treats, and gifts—sent a mobile message to customers on Cyber Monday with a sitewide discount and additional discount on sale items. They included a “paw”-dorable image of a dog trying to catch tennis balls and a message to move fast and take action by clicking on the link.

Why we love it

Reaching shoppers where they already are—their phones—is the perfect way to break through the noise of all the other retailers trying to reach shoppers during the shopping bonanza. The sense of humor, not only in the message (“throw the ball, already!”), but also in the image, allows BarkShop to capture the attention of their dog-loving customers in a unique, comical way that drives action.

Dermalogica Cyber Monday mobile message

What they did

Skincare brand, Dermalogica, sent a mobile message to customers reminding them to shop their Cyber Monday deals before they end, and also let customers know they could stock up on free travel size products and a limited edition pouch. They included an eye-catching gif of the products and ended with a clear call-to-action directing users back to the site to shop.

Why we love it

The custom animated graphic is sure to capture the attention of subscribers while also setting expectations of the sale immediately. Plus, the offer itself is a unique incentive different than the rest of the more sale examples we expect to see on this particular shopping holiday.

Albee Baby

What they did

Baby clothes, supplies, and gear retailer, Albee Baby, sent a mobile message to subscribers wishing them a Happy Thanksgiving and reminding them they can stay at home with their little ones and shop online. They also included an image with a holiday message.

Why we love it

We noticed more retailers this year offered Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions that extended beyond those individual days. For a message sent on Thanksgiving Day, we appreciated the personal nature of the message. We loved the friendly holiday wish to the recipients, as well as the sentiment that you easily shop from home instead of rushing out to stores.
